Backyard poultry requires few basic or informal record keeping to know
the performance of individual hens for egg production.
It is easy to obtain the information since each hen lays her egg in a
separate nest regularly and the number of birds reared in backyard is
also very less.
Information on laying capacity and hatching performance for each hen
can be obtained and hens with higher egg production and hatchability
can be selected to reproduce next generation.
Record keeping on expenses, production and sales are required to
analyze the economics of backyard poultry farming if felt necessary by
an enthusiastic farmer.
Record keeping of production also helps the farmer to identify the
underperformer and cull it. Farmer can use the same information to
identify the best performer and breed it for better production.
Different management practices like vaccination, deworming etc. may
also be mentioned in the records.
