Water is the most important nutrient for backyard poultry and hence, access to fresh, clean and cool water at
all times of the day must be ensured.
If birds are not provided water for two days, there will be ceasing of egg production and the birds start
moulting, which is the process of shedding and renewing feathers.
During the moult, the reproductive physiology of the bird is allowed a complete rest from laying and the bird
builds up its body reserves of nutrients and requires at least 10-15 days to restart egg production if it is
good laying season.
A bird can drink twice as much water in weight as it eats feed. For providing water, simple trough or floor
based waterers or hanging waterers can be used.
