Different research institutions under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) (https://icar.org.in/institutes), State Agricultural and Veterinary Universities and associated Krishi Vigyan Kendra (https://icar.org.in/index.php/krishi-vigyan-kendras) (KVK)s are involved in development and promotion of indigenous and improved poultry breeds suitable for backyard rearing apart from delivering the scientific information about poultry farming. Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services of state governments are also involved in promotion of backyard poultry supported by various schemes and programmes. Further, it may be noted that other institutions like private industries, Farmer Producer Organizations, Non-Government Organizations, Self Help Groups, and Farmers’ Associations etc. are also involved in promotion of backyard poultry for the benefit of farming community. The farmers can procure ready to lay pullets from any of the above mentioned organization to start backyard poultry production or as an alternative they may get fertile eggs and hatch them using native breeds to make their own stock.
Although very few institutions and organizations are mentioned below, it must be considered that the following list is not exhaustive. These organizations involve in development and promotion of indigenous and improved poultry breeds and deliver the information based on their climatic conditions, geographical location, socio-economic background, seasons etc.
